Main Page error reports
National variations of the English language have been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 21:16 on 17 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"
It's not urgent, but I think the 2024 Mauritian general election item can be removed now (it's been a week since the election). This would improve the main page's balance on my (widescreen) monitor. jlwoodwa (talk) 05:11, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
Errors in "Did you know ..."
- ... that Leon Trotsky frequented a Jewish dairy restaurant in the Bronx but refused to tip, and the waiters retaliated by spilling hot soup on him?.
In the article, this is presented less strongly, as "according to one story...". Given that Trotsky only spent a few months in the Bronx, and the overall story doesn't do great on a general "sniff test", I don't think it can be presented as hard fact in the DYK hook. Rubenstein places quote marks around the anecdote, but I can't see any citation. The ultimate source seems to be the cited Esquirearticle. We also have a possible CLOP issue here: the article has Trotsky refused to tip after eating as a matter of principle, insisting that "tipping was demeaning to the dignity of a workingman, and that a person should get a regular salary, enough to live on, and not have to depend on tips". For the same reason, he tried to persuade other customers to refuse to tip as well, while the Rubenstein source has As a matter of principle, he refused to leave a tip himself and would harangue other customers to do the same, with the quote elsewhere in the paragraph.. - The Esquire article has an extensive account of the matter and that's because the author's father was a waiter at the restaurant. Such stories have to start somewhere and we have a fairly plausible chain of sources in this case. The anecdote has been repeated in numerous reputable sources such as the journal of the New York State Historical Association and none of them seem to doubt it. Many other famous people were opposed to tipping at this time and it was quite a political issue – see When Tipping Was Considered Deeply Un-American – so laws were passed against it several states. So Trotsky would have been just following an existing political trend.
- As another bit of background, note that Gratuity#Russia says "During the Soviet era, and especially with the Stalinist reforms of the 1930s, tipping was discouraged and was considered an offensive capitalist tradition aimed at belittling and lowering the status of the working class." That's not sourced but it seems quite consistent.
- So, there's no particular reason to doubt this. An unsupported "sniff test" isn't adequate reason to mess with this.

Errors in "On this day"
"1894 – H. H. Holmes (pictured), one of the first modern serial killers, was arrested in Boston after killing at least nine people." There is no mention in the article text of him being the the "first modern serial killer" and there is a whole paragraph that argues against him being a serial killer at all (in the sense he had regular motives for the murders rather than killing for the sake of killing). I am also not clear on how the body count has been built up, the infobox says 1 confirmed victim and 9 suspected (uncited) but there are 5 people listed in the article under "presumed murders" and 11 under "suspected murders" as well as others in other sections. The article's a bit of a mess really and some of the citations are to unreliable sources such as blogs and history.com - Dumelow (talk) 09:39, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Could we add World Prematurity Day for November 17? The article looks ok. Brandmeistertalk 15:44, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- The reference that is supposed to confirm the date is dead. Could you please go for a hunt and fix the reference, Brandmeister or anyone else? Once done, I'm happy to add it. And whilst there's not much time until midnight UTC, once it's done it can appear each year. Schwede66 19:12, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've replaced it with an archived link now. Brandmeistertalk 20:06, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- 1872 – American suffragette Susan B. Anthony was arrested and fined $100 for having voted...
- Whilst she was arrested November 18, 1872, she was not actually fined until the end of her trial in June 1873. Add 'later' or 'after a trial' before "fined"? JennyOz (talk) 08:25, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Errors in the summary of the featured picture
I think that the wording of the summary should be changed. The current phrasing (The European bison (Bison bonasus), also known as the wisent, is a mammal in the family Bovidae, one of two extant species of bison.
) implies that Bovidae is a species of bison, when Bovidae is actually the family of cloven-hoofed ruminants (including cattle, bison, sheep, goats, etc). The species in this case is Bison bonasus. Di (they-them) (talk) 11:25, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
